How to Escape From Dangerous Forest Animals

Occasionally a smaller animals may attack if rabid. Bears and larger carnivores such as mountain lions, cougars and bobcats are the greater danger. Carry a big stick when hiking and don't bring your dog into the wilderness. Even small children can be an attraction to a hungry animal. It's safer to travel in a group and keep dogs and children in sight at all times.

    • 1
      Stand and make yourself look bigger by putting a child on your shoulders or raising your arms over your head. Hold your jacket over your head.

      Show aggression to a wildcat by looking the animal in the eyes and making snarling noises, yelling or even baring your teeth. Don't look a bear in the eyes.

      Back away slowly. Never turn and try to run away. These animals are faster than humans.

      Avert an attack by yielding a stick or throwing a rock. Never bend down to pick one up or turn your back on the animal.
    • 5
      Lie face-down on the ground or in the fetal position to minimize damage in an attack. Cover your head and the back of your neck with your arms and hands. Leave a backpack on to protect your back.

      Defend yourself by yelling and aiming for the eyes or nose with your thumbs, fingers, fists or weapon.
